Improve Writing Skills, Grade 5-12

For those high school students who already have a negative view of writing, asking them to write a paper on 18th century literature, Shakespeare, or the Classics is a quick way to ensure those students will never enjoy writing. If teens are going to improve their writing skills, the assignments must be subjects that interest them and do not require numerous rewrites. To improve writing, the stress involved must be reduced, and students need to learn with pleasure, which is what we do here at the Walden Writing Shop.

According to recent studies, too many high school students receive insufficient writing training, have limited opportunities to produce longer research-based assignments, and have little time to practice writing in the classroom. Similar to this, it is rare for high school students to receive writing education that is relevant to their everyday lives and is taught by qualified instructors who have received specialized training in content-based writing teaching.

The Writing Foundation reported the top 5 reasons teens give for hating to write in high school:
They are bored.  They are afraid of failing.
They feel writing requires too much effort, and they hate the many rewrites.
Writing takes too long. They get frustrated.

We understand this at Walden Writing and our staff is trained to make writing fun, interesting, and with success as the reward for young adults and teens. We do not use boring topics, require endless rewrites, or end in discouragement. Our strategies ensure that teens feel good about what they have written and thereby will relax and allow themselves to enjoy the writing experience.
This method has been quite successful with teens and young adults.
